This is a translation of the original German article. The opinion research institute YouGov conducted a survey of 2000 adults eligible to vote. They wanted to know:
"Suppose a military attack on Germany were to emerge, comparable to the Russian attack on Ukraine that began in February 2022. What do you think you personally would be most likely to do in such a situation?"
The result, which is prominently featured in almost all of this morning's headlines: "One in ten is ready for military service," headlines such as Der Spiegel, Die Welt, Handelsblatt and Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger.
To be more precise: 11 percent of those surveyed expressed this view, i.e. around 220 people in the sample. To be even more precise, 5 percent (about 100 people) would volunteer to serve in the armed forces, while the other 6 percent (about 120 people) merely expected to be drafted and trained for service. With how much fighting spirit they look forward to service for the fatherland is another matter; simple "expectations" don't proove anything in this direction.
In other words, around 90 percent of those surveyed - the remaining 1780 people - are thus unwilling or not explicitly willing to take up arms. This also raises the question of who or what people have in mind: Are they willing to defend Germany in the sense of their home - or the state, political Berlin, which people tend to be much more critical of than their private surroundings.
There were more interesting findings though: The willingness to serve or even to fight was particularly pronounced among the generation over 60 years - who would therefore not be drafted anyway. Younger people, on the other hand, tended more strongly to leave Germany. No explanations have yet been given for this.
Those who can handle a weapon (23 percent according to the survey) are more likely to want to stay in the country, but: "The willingness to volunteer for military service is also low among them, but still more than twice as high as among those who cannot shoot." (Berliner Zeitung)
Moreover, those who are more willing to do military service were men and... voters of the Green Party. This may come as a surprise if one shares the impression that the Greens are still living off their image as the party of the peace movement. The fact that the party leadership or government members of the Greens are currently unflinchingly and repeatedly disregarding their 2021 election promise not to send weapons and armaments to war zones is one thing.
The other is this poll result:
"Slightly more young people than older people opted for the option of leaving their own country in the event of war. According to the survey, the willingness to help out, even if not with a weapon in hand, is more pronounced among the over-60s, for whom a combat mission would not be an option anyway, partly for health reasons, than among younger people.
The pollsters did not find any significant differences between Germans in the east and west. Men and people who said they voted for the Green Party in the 2021 federal election were slightly more inclined to volunteer for armed service in the aforementioned attack scenario than women and supporters of other parties."
However, you didn't read that everywhere. For example, the Berliner Zeitung, the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger and the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland kept this information in their respective reports.
The same paragraph from the original dpa [= German Press Agency] report can be read in Spiegel, Welt, Handelsblatt, RP or even the Börsen-Zeitung in the following, abbreviated version (omissions marked and highlighted by me):
"Slightly more young people than older people opted for the option of leaving their own country in the event of war. According to the survey, the willingness to help out, even if not with a weapon in hand, is more pronounced among the over 60s [...] than among the younger ones. Significant differences between Germans in East and West, on the other hand, were not found by the pollsters.[...]"
And it has remained with these omissions until now (as of Friday, February 10th 2023, 11:40 a.m.).
